The first 3D Sandbox GTA type game?

The first 3D Sandbox GTA type game?

I had trouble sleeping last night, in my bored state i was thiking about all kinds of old games i’d played years ago. One that cropped up was a game called Hunter it was in 3D and you basically went around a bunch of islands carrying our various tasks and missions, to be honest i can’t remember a whole lot about the point of the game. Something that did come to mind though was the similarity between this and the ever growing number of 3D sandbox games. Hunter was in it’s own way a forerunner to the GTAs and Saints Rows of today.

For example you could walk around and enter buildings etc, you could also use a fairly wide range of vehicles including:

  • bycycles
  • tanks
  • cars
  • ships
  • vans
  • surf board
  • rowing boat
  • helicopter

Driving a Tank in Hunter

You could also intereact with other characters to a point. and all this on one floppy disk. There’s not a whole lot of information about the game around. Below is a video i found showing some game play.

I also had this game…. Although it looks very dated now I had hours of fun on it. In many ways it does beat GTA4. A classic!
